The promise of the tech industry (and fintech in general) is that with software, automation, and people, we can build products at scale for millions of sellers with one dollar. In The Unbanking of America, Lisa Servon argues that most traditional financial institutions shun unbanked populations because they're not worth their time or business. On the other hand, current alternative financial institutions such as check cashiers and payday lenders offer products to these folks, but at a very high cost: "Banks want one customer with a million dollars," the owner of one check-cashing chain tells her. "Check cashers like us want a million customers with one dollar." At Sakura, we're building what we call the Lender of First Resort: we want to be a small business owner's first port of call when they need a starter loan or line of credit to get their business off the ground. We want to provide these financial services at a fair, honest, and transparent price.
